Final Report

My response to this project was to develop a product that could help people. I thought of a device that could help people find there grocery’s in supermarkets.my device is perfectly suited for family’s and people who are looking to find food easily in stores.I hope my device will be small practical and easy to use.
My first priority was to look at ways this could be done and the technology behind them. To do this I
looked at RFID a form of data tracking which is used in most stores to help find products, keep stock and organise them. It reads barcodes but it can read them while the items are moving. It is similar to other forms of tracking like Wifi, found in stores, Internet cafes’s and some phone box’s in major city’s.
Bluetooth is also something I thought of using as it’s a device that transfers data in a short range, which in a store full of products all within close range I believed this would be use full. I also looked at barcodes and how they work in stores read by RFID but are also read by USB scanners.
so even after looking at these major forms of data trasference I discovered that my device would be better as a application they are found in I-phones and mobile devices. They are easy to download and are easily available online. The program works by using the application software to use RFID to lock on to the location of the item and directs the customer to the item in question.
The user must first turn on the device enter the items into the application and then go to the store. The RFID scans the items and transfers the data back into the device. It also helps the user by telling them how far the items are and also alternatives if the customer cannot find or wants a cheaper option. I feel companies may want to purchase this device like Tesco or ASDA because it will speed up shopping for customers make things less stressfull and suggestive sale for the users which will increase profit for the company’s. However if it is a child or old age pensioner it will not do suggestive sale as this this is taking advantage of there age.
I made some sketches of the device and what it will look like on my device and how it functions and works. I thought perhaps this way it would be easy to show how the product works and how the user can manage it. More importantly demonstrates how simple the item is to use in a crowded store. As the application is found in mobile phones it will be light weight and easily moved around. Easily accessible and its destined that way so it will be comfortable for any user. But also because they will be expert users of a phone and novice users of the device it will also be simple to learn how to use and access.
I looked at the Christene Faulkners Theories of computer interaction found that applications, software and programs and found that her theories help me develop what my device should or should not do. They should be easy to function and should give sufficient feedback and they should have not have too many options to confuse the user.they should also give help the user and that no special training will be necessary. This can be found in the book called The essence of human computer interaction where she has many theories on how applications and software should work.
I found after the application “Tasty tracker Mk 1” was completed I was satisfied how the software would work and how the application on mobile phones would work. I feel that this idea will benefit shoppers and family’s alike and that it will enrich the shopping experience.

Below is the final video for my project there is one of the dream and one of it in use.It gives us a beleavable sence that this can be made real when in fact it is a fake.

My presentation will be based on the idea of fooling the human mind into beleaving that a device can work but in reality it is impossible. Below are some videos that i have used as insperation for my project.

Above this is a sight that makes videos about how devices can make games in the real world.Obviousls this isnt real yet it gives the illusion that it is a working device that  can be downlaoded.

I also watched this video it demonstraits how dreams are what they mean to human perseption. In this film is a man who cannot fully diffretiate between reality and subcontious. I think its intresting becuase it helps me with my project and also ives us i idea of the human mind.

I think it can make a intresting point of view of the dream world and how it works as it deeply incorperates the memories feelings and events of a person. This makes a dream but also to help understand the linits of our own mind.

The layout of my appication would be somthing like this (figure A)

shows drawings of what the application will look like. (Figure B) is the actual device in the laptop at work.

Above (figure a) is a simple diagram that shows how the product works. There are too processes to this design the long process with dreaming and strggling to remember only to wright it down and this is not very accurate. The short process is to use the dream recorder “Vista Dreamscape” which will record your dreams so you can look back on them and use them for personal or professional use later.

I have made some adjustments to my design as shown below and this is my final project built in the form of neurotecnolagy wires. I have hooked them up to the device that will convert the images into data that will show up onto my laptop as also shown.

This is what the prototype looks like in a diagam. this is me fixing the device to my fiance’s head then imputing the wires into the device. i will then insert the device into the laptop and then allow him to go to sleep. As the device begins to sence REM it will activate allowing the images to be relayed into the laptop. I t sences and responds to how the person in reacting within the dream world and sends the images into the laptop. The laptop translates these images and the persons reactions and makes these into a video that can be found on windows media player.

Below is a sample diagram of what my device does and how it works apon usage.

I recently found some new information about recording dreams and another set of brilliant minds were looking into studying the human mind which i found could benifit my research.

In the University of California, Berkeley, Jack Gallant a student and some of his piers found a way of being able to see how a set of test subjects could looked at various objects but could tell which one they were thinking about.

In order to accomplish this they made a kind of software that could look deep into the test subject’s brain movements while they were looking at an image. But the software could see the brains reaction to this and could predict what the subject was thinking.

Yukiyasu Kamitani at ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan has gone a step further: his team has used an image of brain activity taken in a MRI scanner to remake a black-and-white image which i thought was most impressive.

Emotiv Systems Have also been doing reasearch into brain tecnolagy with a device  called brain computer interface. They feel that by 2050 you will be able to buy the device and it will record all your dreams. They have also tried to think of other ways of recording dreams with the use of nanobots that will record dreams by spreading to all corners of the brain and records the activation patterns of neurons.

Above is how the device will look like. Thery feel within the futer they can use cognitive science to help activivate neural patterns that correspond to sensory experiences.  Scientists have already done experiments with cats using electrodes, scientist Garrett Stanley was able to extrapolate what a cat was seeing merely by monitoring the neurons of its visual cortex.  Below are some images from there experiement.

The next steps will be to increase the resolution, add monitoring of emotions, sounds, and smells, and make it safe for human use.  An alternative route, if nanobots are still not ready for commercial deployment by 2050, is to have minimally invasive surgery where tiny holes, no larger than a grain of sand, are drilled in the skull.  Electronic nanofibers could be routed through these holes from a port on the outside to neurons throughout the brain.  The holes could be protected by a plastic membrane, ensuring that no foreign particles could pass through them into the brain.  The access ports on the scalp would be compatible with a BCI headset designed to monitor activity in specific neural groups and selectively stimulate neurons according to a program.

A major challenge, of course, would be to get FDA approval for such a device.  The therapeutic and practical benefits of a high-resolution BCI device are so large that if it can be shown not to cause any damage or negative side-effects to its user, approval seems likely.

If the BCI device offers input to the brain as well as recording output, then dreams could be played back too.  A Dream Machine would let us show our dreams to others.  If we know which neural activation pattern corresponds to which perceptions (sight, sounds, etc.), it’s not a huge leap to selectively stimulate neurons to produce customized dream scenarios, or even enter the dreams of others in action.
